Never thought about plugs and voltage before? Read this.
Plug shapes. Countries never agreed on one outlet shape. If your plug's pins don't match their holes, it won't go in. A travel adapter is a cheap little block that changes the shape. Buy it before you go; airports charge a lot more.
Voltage. The Americas and Japan use around 110 volts. Most of the world uses around 230. Phone and laptop chargers work with both. Look for "100–240V" on the charger. Hair dryers, straighteners and kettles usually work with only one, so they can burn out or run weak abroad.
